Where It All Began

Where It All Began

Growing up in St. Elizabeth, sea moss wasn't something trendy. It was just life.

I was six years old the first time I really paid attention to it. Every Friday, my grandmother would meet the local fishermen, they knew her by name, and they knew she only wanted what had been harvested that same morning. That was our south coast way.

I'd sit on the counter and watch her rinse every strand by hand. The kitchen filled with steam, and with stories, about plants, about care, about the people who'd taught her the same thing her mother had taught her. By morning, what started as sea moss had turned into something smooth and silken, ready to nourish every spoonful we shared.

It wasn't just food. It was her love, passed down quietly, one Friday at a time.

Same sea moss, same spirit

Years later, not much has changed. Mecantu sea moss still comes from the same waters that shaped those memories. It's still hand harvested with care, still prepared slowly, and still treated with the same respect my grandmother gave it every Friday. We're not doing anything new here, we're just continuing what generations before us already knew, that real nourishment is gentle, and it's meant to be shared.

That's where Mecantu began. Not in a lab, not in a boardroom, but on a kitchen counter in St. Elizabeth.

St. Elizabeth is just one parish. We're slowly working our way through the stories behind all 14.
