Our First Notting Hill Carnival with Mecantu
Share
Notting Hill Carnival has always been a celebration of culture and community, and this year Mecantu had a stall right in the heart of it.
The atmosphere was electric from the moment we set up. Music floated through the streets, dancers moved past in bursts of feathers and sequins, and the scent of food and spices filled the air. Amidst it all, we created our little corner of Jamaican heritage, a place where people could connect and discover the tradition of sea moss.
Our cheeky banner, "Wet up yuh whistle", became an instant crowd-pleaser. It drew people in with a smile, and before long, we had conversations flowing as freely as the carnival itself. Some people were curious, asking “What’s sea moss?” Others already knew and told us stories of how their families used it back home. A few even said tasting Mecantu reminded them of their childhood and family tradition. For us, that is what Mecantu is all about.
By the end of carnival, we left tired but full of gratitude. Our first carnival showed us that sea moss has a place, even in the middle of one of London’s biggest street festivals.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by.
